Research on the Employment of Personal Assistants in Social Care

Personal Assistant

Commissioned by Welsh Government, the Welsh Institute for Health and Social Care is leading this study in partnership with Data Cymru.

Through the Social Care Fair Work Forum’s Task and Finish Group, a lack of understanding of the role of personal assistants in Wales along with data and information gaps has been identified and that research to better understand the challenges faced by this workforce is required.

A personal assistant provides person-centred care and support for individuals, so they can achieve personal well-being outcomes where the individual lives.

Using a mixed method approach, the study will gather Wales-wide data and information, identify key issues, and identify best practice and recommend options for introducing changes to the system.

Professor Mark Llewellyn is project director and Dr Sarah Wallace is project manager.
